Report says Energy Star label might be fraudulent

The Energy Star label is intended to be a label that indicates energy efficiency. Energy Star is a joint venture between the EPA and Energy Department, and functions as a guide for millions in government subsidies.

This is what makes it a worry the Government Accountability Office was able to get 15 fictions products approved. These products included a gas-powered alarm clock that was so big it would practically require auto financing.

Unrealistic products approved by Energy Star

When the Government Accountability Office submitted fictional products for approval, they were given the Energy Star logo 15 times out of 20. Products with 20% higher efficiency ratings than anything else on the market were approved with not a single question asked. A bogus air cleaner that was really a space heater with a duster and fly paper taped on was also certified.

Partnerships with Energy Star

Beyond approving products which were bogus or improbably specified, the GAO report on Energy Star also discovered that companies could easily get certified as partners. Once a business is an Energy Star Partner, they can download and use the logo. This means products that carry the Energy Star logo may or may not have ever been tested by the EPA and Department of Energy.

Put simply, getting an Energy Star label for a product may be easier than getting instant payday advances.

Does Energy Star need independent certification?

For some products, the Energy Star label needs how the manufacturer provide “independent laboratory certification” of their energy savings promises. This includes fluorescent lights and energy-efficient windows. Products such as air conditioners and water heaters, however, don’t have this prerequisite.

Will Energy Star change their system?

Both the EPA and DOE have responded to the GAO report. The Department of Energy is guaranteeing to set up comprehensive independent testing for Energy Star labels. However the react, it is obvious the Energy Star brand needs some serious help – from the government and the ruling agencies.
